Reintegration after long-term illness

Have you been absent for a long period due to illness or an accident? Then we’ll look together at how you can return to work in a safe, healthy, and sustainable way. Sometimes this works without extra measures. Sometimes a reintegration process is needed.

  • What is a reintegration process?

    A reintegration process is a legal procedure where:

    – The occupational doctor checks whether you can (eventually) resume your own job,
    – Adapted work or a modified schedule is considered,
    – Employer and employee discuss this with support from HR.

    The goal: help you return to work within your capabilities.

  • When is a reintegration process started?

    It can be initiated:

    – at your request,
    – at the employer’s request,
    – or on advice of the treating doctor, advising doctor, or occupational doctor.

    The request is made using a form (available from HR) and is always sent to the occupational doctor from the external service (Securex).

  • How does the process go?
    1. Examination by the occupational doctor: they issue a written opinion.
    2. Meeting with you, HR and your supervisor: together we assess what’s possible.
    3. Drafting a plan: if adapted work is possible, a reintegration plan is created with concrete agreements.
    4. Follow-up and adjustments: the plan is evaluated regularly and adjusted if needed.
  • Possible outcomes

    – You can resume your original job (immediately or after a while)
    – You perform adapted work temporarily or permanently
    – You remain unfit for work and medical force majeure may be considered

Important to know

Participation is mandatory once the process is officially started.
You have the right to be supported by a trusted person.
The occupational doctor not only assesses your fitness but also the necessary adaptations.
